My Story
How I Became
The Luckiest Man in the World!
Hi! My name is Kerry Cameron, but I got my primary stage name when I was very young. I took my initials (KC) and wanted a more exotic last name. I saw a clothing store called LaMont's, so I became "Kacy" (or KC) LaMonte.
I grew up in rural Alaska as the son of a missionary and an artist. I did what most rural Alaskan boys did – a lot of hunting and fishing. I used to go duck hunting before school, and then put the ducks in the Home-Ec refrigerator, my hip-boots in my gym locker, and my 12 ga. shotgun in my book locker. Things sure have changed, haven't they? I have changed, too. I shot my first moose in 7th grade – now I'm a vegetarian.
At 8 years old, I began my stage career as part of a world-traveling native dance group (I am part Thlinget Indian). We averaged 4 commercial performances a week through the summers.
I also began learning the art of wood and silver carving for Alaska Indian Arts, Inc. I am proud to say I have work displayed all over the world, including a totem pole that is now in Japan!
In high school I also apprenticed part-time as a printer's devil, which led me into graphics and publishing later in life. Similarly, I used to DJ school dances, which eventually became a career move, too!
In between working, hunting, and fishing I managed to letter in wrestling, race in cross-country skiing, and even took 2nd place in a mountain marathon (although if you look at me now, you will not believe it!), and was very active in church.
Wanting to get out and see the world, I joined the Army Special Forces in Intelligence. Besides Ft. Bragg, I lived in Germany, Italy, and Greece, and spent some time in many other countries. I was up for discharge after 4 years, but the Army pulled a fast one and extended my duty for 2 more years "due to the needs of the Army." – Note: ALWAYS read the fine print! Well, it was fun.
I managed to take 2 years worth of college classes while in the service (mostly Russian language training and computer programming). In 1986 I left the Army to pursue a philosophy degree at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Well, at least now I was unmarketable in two languages…
While on summer breaks, I commercially fished and logged – a marked difference from being a cashier during the school year! Those new reality shows about logging and fishing in Alaska will give you a good idea of what I was doing back then!
During this time I also managed to do some volunteer work with kids. The volunteer organization had a guest magician, and I was amazed at how well he kept the kids' attention! I had never seen a magician before, and it opened a whole new world to me.
Fairbanks, Alaska was not the magic mecca of the world at the time (and still isn't as far as I know), and I had no idea how to learn magic except through tricks and books I bought at a novelty store and borrowed from the local library. When in Anchorage, I saw a small ad for a magic store that ended up being a spare room in a private residence. I bought a bit of used and knock-off magic at terribly inflated prices, but by then I was hooked. A few months later in 1998 I was asked if I would perform strolling magic at a local restaurant. I only needed to know a little magic, and I just had to do a few tricks over and over at each table. I was thrilled!
After college, I discovered there was not a huge market for philosophers, so I continued to log and fish. I ended up creating a small monthly real estate newspaper, website, and TV show (thanks to my printing, art, and computer backgrounds). This meant a ton of work for about 10 days per month, and then a lot of time on my hands. I practiced magic and performed birthday parties until I was eventually hired by a traveling circus to do pre-shows for them. I discovered that I didn't like living in hotels, so I did it for less than a year, and went back to publishing and doing small local shows.
I started doing bigger events and stunts, as well as working with parrots. I did an underwater escape through 6 inches of ice in the Tanana River when it was 42 below zero (not the smartest thing in the world), bullet catches (in the mouth), bed-of-nails and fire breathing. All of this started in the early '90's. I also studied hypnotism at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and then began doing stage hypnotism shows.
In the later '90's I met a fascinating person on the new-fangled thing called the internet. Due to a friend who worked for at a long distance carrier we could talk for free (I did not ask how) so I was calling from Alaska to Tennessee daily, sometimes for hours. She, too, was a philosophy student, and was going to law school. After asking her numerous times to marry me (over a period of 2 years), I wore her down, and we got married. I lost my publishing in Alaska, but I gained a wonderful wife in Tennessee.
I convinced her (with a little help from a scholarship) to study law at UNC since I had liked living in North Carolina while in the Army. While she was in law school we had a happy little surprise -- she was pregnant! I can say that my son went to one of the finest law schools in the nation before he was even born (and a few times after he was born, too)!
When we first arrived in North Carolina, I worked as a graphic artist for a printing company and started building my magic business. After about a year I was popular enough to do magic full-time. Soon I was the busiest magician in the Triangle, and had also started a thriving DJ business doing weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and corporate events mostly, with a few school dances thrown in to keep things interesting.
After my wife's graduation from law school, we moved to Boone, NC so she could work with a small law firm. While in Boone, we found out our son has autism. He was incredibly temperamental and hard to live with at that time, but with a lot of very expensive therapy (and hefty doses of love and patience!), he is now a happy, popular 6 year old. It has been difficult, but Aidan is now such a joy to be around. He is also quite a ham. I can't imagine where he gets that from…? Lucky for him, he got his looks from his mom!
We also have two parrots -- Jax, a gentle giant Greenwing Macaw; and Kyla, a loud white Umbrella Cockatoo who likes nothing more than to snuggle. We also have Ella Faunt, our 175 lb. English Mastiff lap dog, and George, a chocolate lab recently adopted from the SPCA who is very enthusiastic about life!
We eventually moved our menagerie back to the Triangle because there's no place like home! So here I am, doing what I love in a place I love!
I've performed for celebrities like Michael Jordan, the rock band Tool, and Jonny Fairplay of Survivor fame, but every show is equally important to me. Can you think of a more awesome job than making kids happy, keeping moms from stressing out, or being on stage with hundreds of people screaming for more? Life is good!
